Vinay Pathak and Kay Kay Menon are darn good actors too when offered the right roles. I thought Kay Kay was fantastic in MMJ and Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi and Vinay has been terrific in the few good films he's been in - Johnny Gaddar, Manorama 6ft Under, Khoya Khoya Chand to name a few, all different character roles.

Abhay deol is a damn fine actor and so is vinay phatak.I think Kay Kay is a very iffy actor and seems to excel in slightly neurotic character roles.

Chiming in to praise Gran Torino. A great film in which this clichedness of the plot is steamrolled by a fantastic performance from Eastwood. Everyone else is in good form to but he totally steals the show. A very satisfying oen time watch though I doubt its going to be a film I'll keep going back to. Hellion, I just started on 12 angry men earlier today. Should finish it tonight.

@LP : having all of fassbinders movies out in a 20+ dvd set makes very little business sense.
Firstly fassbinder has a very niche audience, secondly many in that niche audience including me do not want all of his works but only a small subset of his best works.
If criterion bought out complete works starting 250$ each for a director then I can say with a certain degree of confidence that the company will go bust.

As far as I can tell criterion does a very good job of getting each film done in the best possible way visually, so if you have hard-coded subs then you are losing a part of the screen and its incredibly distracting.Even If I dont know a language there are times I rewind a scene and see it without subs because its visually arresting.

Been buying several games off digital distribution:

from Steam (http://store.steampowered.com):

Audiosurf for $9.99 (right after which they had their New Year sale, where they priced at at 4.99 till 2 Jan, sigh. You can also get the Half-Life expansion packs for less than a dollar. Apparently they also have Bioshock for $5, but that gives me a "this offer is not available in your region" message. Potty Poo.)

From GOG (http://gog.com) (a no-DRM game download site, generally has older games):

Redneck Rampage Collection
Broken Sword 2: Smoking Mirror

(Both for $5.99, I am much pleased)

btw they have the Oddworld games and lots of other potentially interesting retro-games on sale...I fear for my credit card now.

The Wrestler was pretty damn great. Aronofsky's direction is devoid of the pyrotechnics of his earlier films but is all the more poignant and affecting as a result. It's a very realistic and grounded look on the life of a pro wrestler well past his salad days. Mickey Rourke is absolutely terrific, looking every bit the character and adding layers and little touches to it that would have escaped lesser actors. Definitely one of the highlights of the year and his career. While the film is set in a smaller wrestling circuit compared to WWF, it still evokes memories of the time when one was a big fan of such stuff and it's great to see all the behind the scenes action and preparation. Great stuff.

So my aunt was in town the last time I was home and among other goodies, she enquired whether I would have any use for a compact Samsung camera. I replied in the affirmative, implying that even if I didn't have any direct use for it, any money I might receive for pawning it off would come in handy. It looks something like the below picture, not sure if it's the exact same model.

http://www.image-acquire.com/Samsung%20S750%20Digital%20Camera.jpg

Anyway, it didn't come to that, because my dad seized the opportunity and said its compact nature was more in line with his requirements and he would trade it for his Olympus SP550UZ.

KKC did get good critical reviews but it was mainly for the sets and costumes. The movie itself was too pimpy for critics and too boring for the masses.

The critics here won't know a good film if it bit them in the ass. Most reviews were politely negative. As for the audience, I didn't mean the masses. It's quite obvious it wasn't for them. I meant the sort of people who frequent sites like PFC and the so-called "intelligent" junta who salivate over Anurag Assyap's every move. When the film released, most of these guys were like "Ye kya ho raha hai. Kuch samaj nahi aaya" and shit.

And I think that sort of disappointed Mishra a good deal. He even went on to call them "korean film buffs" in some interview.

He gives great interviews. This should be fantastic when it happens.

the great gatsby plot is terribly common and I guess thats why it hit me as so spectacular because of the way it was pulled off. The passages about the gatsby parties are singularly brilliant with everyone seeming to behave pretty much as if in an antonioni film. The passage where FSF is describing each of the party people is remarkably surreal. The whole book is like a domestic play by William.S.Burrougs that keeps taking a life its own independent of its principally morose characters. The sheer amount of violence thats built in the climax is so unbelieveable. And the fact thats its all done in around 180 odd pages makes it a certainity in my case that I will keep rereading it all the time.

They used to be good fun to watch live with the old lineup of Jack, Nolan and Ryan but this new lineup with Nolan on vox, solos that seem to come out of nowhere and last forever, the below average growls over what is basically Priest inspired metal all contribute to making the new Kryptos (the band, not the album) a bit of a snooze fest. Don't hate the band, they just bore me.

Traitors was my first encounter with MI and was highly enjoyable....its definitely one of the top metal releases of 08. After listening to traitors I caught hold of their earlier album Discordia which was equally mind blowing

It would have been if Hutson didn't take himself so seriously. There's no camp value to his writing and it's of a really low standard. I'll pass it on with Balaji (if I get to meet him tomorrow) if you want. Been trying to get rid of it for years but even confirmed kleptos make it a point to return the damn thing.

Also, add The Trap by Tabitha King to the list. Stepehen King's wife's first book that's basically like Straw Dogs in a novelised format except that here there is no husband and it's a woman and her 2 young kids. Not very high on the gross out scale but just full of gratuitous violence and some really disgusting rape scenes. And really badly written.

The song was called 'Papa, I'm Sorry.' The fact that it's not on youtube is evidence of the shocking social and moral degradation of India as a country (if any was needed). It was inspired by the brutal Mr Nigam who quite naturally wanted a manlier offspring than the one he was saddled with. "You are no Nigam! You are Nigarrr!" he used to roar as he initiated the occult practice of Sonu Spanking (http://greatbong.net/2007/07/17/sonu-hua-madhyam/) later continued by the vile and lecherous Subhash K Jha. As a result Sonu was forced to change his name to Niigam to put some distance from his effete poncing about and the power and glory of the Nigams.
