God of War's David Jaffe rants about getting developers' names on game boxes
...game makers have little room to negotiate. Even the guys who make CALL OF DUTY, HALO, and GTA are not in a perfect position, as amazingly genius as they are. Because All of those games- even if given to C+ level developers- can still make crazy cash for at least 2-4 more iterations before the public catches on and stops buying the series. I am almost certain that if those developers walked away because their money demands were not met, the folks who own the rights to those series would keep pumping them out- regardless of quality- and keep raking in the cash.

Crysis Warhead rocks hard, according to Eurogamer and IGN
Warhead manages to address practically every issue players had with the original game. It may fit inside the same story, but as it follows a different character ("Psycho" Sykes, the original game's Statham-alike, and a man specifically designed, in the words of the developers, "to make you want to blow s*** up") through different encounters, the pacing has been radically altered for the better, with the big freeze arriving far earlier, and a far more satisfying finale than the slightly hurried and abrupt conclusion of the first Crysis.
Both human and alien AI have been improved, too - the NKA are better than ever at flanking intelligently, deciding when to hold back and when to try and take you out from a distance, and they're now much more willing to use cover. Equally, they no longer have that strange habit of standing around looking like they're trying to recall the name of the actor from Q: The Winged Serpent, while you pump bullets into them from close up, either. (It was Michael Moriarty, by the way, but I sincerely hope you already knew that.) And the aliens - a real weak point in the first game - aren't half bad themselves. In fact, if anything, they're now a little more human in their intelligence, hiding, lurking, blasting you with freeze rays from just out of range, and far more eager to take you down with them via their post-death explosions.

Gamasutra post-mortem on Crysis Warhead
Vehicle rides, even if they are on rails, can be a lot of fun, just shooting lots of targets, but in Crysis, the switch in gameplay was just too great. We spent eight hours teaching the players, "Do whatever you want," then suddenly you jump into a vehicle and we just turned off the exit key. Of course, the first things players did was say, "I want to get out."
We taught them before, "Do what you want! Freedom!" Then we broke the design rule that we ourselves created and spent a lot of time teaching players. Suddenly, that rule wasn't valid anymore, and that is an abrupt switch.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Post-Mortem at Gamasutra
Cryptically assigned the working title Big, the project would prove to be Naughty Dog's biggest and most complex game yet. This postmortem discusses some of the things that we Dogs struggled with, some of our successes and failures, and what we plan to do differently next time...

Wired's opinion on T-rating for new Mortal Kombat
In a recent Gamastura story, the game's designer Paulo Garcia discusses the latest iteration of the Mortal Kombat series and some of the changes being put into place for the sake of a Teen rating. DC's comics are geared toward all ages, after all -- can't have the younger generation seeing their favorite characters doing anything unseemly. That means nixing dismemberment, deleting hallmark fatalities and making sure classic DC heroes like Batman can't kill at all.

Weird Games List
Unsurprisingly the bulk are Japanese
2. Bible Adventures (NES)
Bible Adventures saw you take part in various biblical stories such as loading the animals onto the ark, battling against Goliath and transporting the baby Moses down the Nile. Possibly the best part was the ability to throw Moses in the river and watch him slowly drown.

All this leads to a boss that needs to be hit twenty thousand times to die which takes roughly three hours. Truly, truly bizarre.
Sheesh, and I thought Bowser was a tricky boss.

New Yorker article on CliffyB and the art of game design
Of course, there's a significant GoW2 plug here but this is a spiffily done and highly readable piece.
Bleszinski was born in Boston, in 1975, eleven years to the day after the birth of his oldest brother, Greg. His father, whom Bleszinski describes as a “very stressed-out guy,” was an engineer for Polaroid. The Bleszinskis were a close family. His mother, Karyn, told me, “We always sat down at the dinner table together. That was always important to my husband and me.” One of Bleszinski’s earliest and strongest memories is the smell of popcorn spreading thickly throughout the house after he had gone to bed, which convinced him that his “parents were having a great time and throwing a party” without him. In truth, this was merely his father’s pre-bedtime ritual: over this nightly bowl of popcorn he would often melt an entire stick of butter. In 1990, when Bleszinski was fifteen, his forty-seven-year-old father died when an aortic aneurysm ruptured while he was golfing. Bleszinski still remembers what game he was playing when he learned of his father’s death: the Nintendo game Blaster Master. He never played it again.

Holy Day of The Dead, Batman! Tim Schaefer shares design doc for Grim Fandango HERE
We didn’t have the last puzzle designed when I wrote that document, so I wrote two nonsense paragraphs and then overlapped them in the file so it would look like the final puzzle description was in there, but obscured by a print formatting error. That way I could turn the document in by the deadline. As if anybody was going to read it all the way to the end anyway. Ha ha. Obfuscation triumphs again! I delight in Evil!
