Hadn't seen this before. I do agree that Narayan's characters come from a small pool but that's his style and nothing wrong with that. Narayan's writing is an honest reflection of his background and outlook and as Tharoor himself says, the stories often captivate. That's the point.

Yeah, I'd say that was a pretty unreasonable rant, Especially since there was nothing even remotely transcendent or any universal epiphanies to be had from the crock that Jane Austen wrote. Unless there's, as I've long suspected, some deep subtext to paragraphs like this one:
Their subjects in general were such as belong to an opening acquaintance. On his side were the inquiries,--"Was she a horsewoman?--Pleasant rides?--Pleasant walks?--Had they a large neighbourhood?--Highbury, perhaps, afforded society enough?--There were several very pretty houses in and about it.--Balls--had they balls?--Was it a musical society?"

It reflects if anything Tharoor's ridiculously Anglophilia which forgives a dumb British society lady, transgressions that no Indian author ought to be allowed the liberty of committing. Why does every Indian author have to present a cosmic and yet entirely balanced picture of the country as a whole? How many actually do it? So what if RKN chose a ridiculously small canvas to paint on? It was his mileiu, he had an unparalleled familiarity with it.
And the points he raises about RK's langauge are nothing short of absurd when you consider the fact that Tharoor himself is guilty of painfully strained contrivances like "Draupademocary".

Haha, true that. I found his rant pretty unwanted and half-arsed too. I've only read 'Swami and Friends' and 'Malgudi Days' by RKN, but both were awesome and sensitive. My sister's read a lot more of him and claims that if RKN used over-the-top language as reasoned by Tharoor, it would've stripped the stories off that necessary vital sensitive-ness and honesty, unlike say Lovecraft, where his elitism really helps in the portrayal of the unspeakable. It's like saying painting on a tree bark diminishes the painter's real vision.

Tharoor's part of that section of the NRI's who gets frustrated when India doesn't imitate the wine and tuxedo culture of the west, not to mention the Oxbridge banter that's exchanged pompously amongst them before the starters. Whether his reason for criticising RKN is justified because of his love and respect for the culture of India is altogether another matter and quite laughable at that. I found that comparison to bollock-carts low-lifely and painful considering that he's the numero uno torchbearer of our country in the UN and to an extent elsewhere, you'd expect him to heartily endorse the finer points of the same country. I wonder if he realises that horse-ridden carriages don't have anymore extra gear. I wonder if all our other desi representatives abroad suffer from this same 'I'm a mix of east and west' syndrome. I think it's a failed initiative by Tharoor to uproot RKN as the finest author of our country to somehow place himself on the same pedestal - he mentioned in an interview long back that he wants to be remembered as an author primarily when he goes 'Tharoor six feet under'. If he harbours hidden desires to clinch the Nobel Prize that has so eluded RKN all his life, or whether Greene and Maugham would appreciate him likewise, then that's just utter stupidity.

Apart from all that I do enjoy Tharoor's various other articles where he attacks typical stereotypes like astrology, numerology etc. One of his son writes for openDemocracy and his articles are pretty interesting, focusing mainly on the loopholes of the Bush administration. Ravenus, you might like to check out what he has to say about Gibson's Apocalypto. :P
