So what do you do when two of your favourite TV Shows join forces to produce a crossover comic issue (moreover, a so called 'infinitely secret' one)? Rejoice my pal, rejoice. And rejoice I did! I've been a Simpsons fan for quite a long time. My earliest memory of television (apart from the Thriller video) is watching a rerun of Episode No.5 Season 1 (Bart the General) when I was in the 1st Grade (circa 1994). This was the episode where Bart asks Herman about his missing arm, he replies, 'When your teacher tells you to keep your hands inside the window on the bus... better listen to her' and Bart gulps. I remember that scene very vividly – I never keep my hands outside ha. Also the Simpsons’ comics were some of the first few comics that I ever laid hands on (along with the kvlt Street Fighter comics) so I've always been a huge fanboy.
But being a fanboy, you can't help but feel a little anxious - what if it doesn't live up to your (magnanimous) expectations? Once you start losing faith, it's mostly all down hill... Even if the comic is a good read you can't help but be a wee bit cynical/disappointed (it does happen to everyone!) unless it’s a fantastic read. But rest assured, this crossover is as fantastic as any Municipal Waste album - every page is packed with a punch and makes sure that there are laughs all round.
The manner in which this series was written is way cool. It’s split into two issues - 'Somewhere Over The Brain-bow' and 'Liquid Diamond is Forever'. This allows the former to end on one of the best cliff hangers I’ve ever come across. Before diving into the comic, while you’re still looking at the cover, the first question that arises of course is how the hell is the actual cross-over going to happen? I was hoping that they wouldn't pull a time machine stunt a la The Flintstones meet The Jetsons and tons of other comics - and thankfully, they didn't. Here, the events occurring in Futurama are 'actually happening' and The Simpsons are merely a pop culture phenomenon in the Futurama universe. So, with a very clever plot device <minor spoiler>utilizing comic books and an old foe from a previous Futurama episode</minor spoiler>, Ian Boothby manages to blend both worlds very smoothly. After this happens, the comic is a non-stop riot! There’s not much to hold it back… what with characters like Bender and Homer, Zoidberg and Burns, Bart and Fry, Maggie and Nibbler, Farnsworth and Frink etc. etc. teaming up, the possibilities are endless. The plot is as zany as any good Simpsons/Futurama episode - starting from somewhere and ending up eons away, rife with bouts of slapstick humour interspersed with intelligent jokes too.
The Futurama/Simpsons Infinitely Secret Crossover is a must have for fans of both television series’. There isn’t much fun if you’re not familiar with either of the franchises in television or comic medium – in other words, not a good place to start off. But if you have seen/read even a couple of the entries in any of the series’, do go out and look for this. It’s just that one should be familiar with the characters to enjoy the comic that much more. Boisterous, wacky, hilarious and much, much more this one manages to be very coherent and comprehensive as well. A highly satisfying experience!
