There are in totality 4 issues of Gangland and I think it's available as a hardback collector's edition now. Each issue contains 3-4 mini-stories. As the name suggests, Gangland deals with crime - there are many, many different types of crime-related yarns to be found here. You name it - Italian mafia, Latino thugs, Russian Ganglords, petty thieves, cops gone bad, cavemen crime bosses, gangster robots etc. etc. In other words there is a wide variety of stories with many bringing in a sci-fi/horror aspect to the straight crime tale, ensuring that repetition doesn't become a problem while reading this in one sitting. Aesthetically speaking, since each tale has a different writer and artist, a good mixture is prevalent. But herein lies the problem. Most of the art or even the script for that matter is largely hit or miss material. You invariably end up longing for more from the guys who gave you the stories that you liked. Even a slight hesitation, be it in any form (art or lettering in most cases), makes it an exceedingly difficult task to complete an entry even if it is only 5 pages long. Another peeve concerning the filler stories is that uncalled-for-violence seems to be on overdrive since there is a huge gap in story-telling - that too without detail to back it up. One story which I particularly enjoyed was The Big Snooze, authored and illustrated by David Lloyd (V for Vendetta). It's a first person narrative of a Mafioso dog trained to kill coppers. After failing in a particular task for the Gangsters the dog is left to die with several cruel wounds. It is picked up and tended to by a policeman who wants to turn the dog into a sniffer. The dog wants revenge, and needless to say, it eventually does get it. The writing is extremely creative and a few more pages would've surely done it more justice. Even with the good stories you somehow get the feeling that the endings are purposefully rushed because the other stories needed to be fit in. As is the case with most supergroups and anthologies, due to strict limitations in creative space, a damp squib is almost a certain outcome (look at Image's Horrorcide for example). In an industry where most mini-series themselves are lost and forgotten, having short stories in one issue itself is not an enterprising idea I would say. And what do you know? 10 years down the line this is a forgotten comic book. A passionate Vertigo fan would say that they are just showcasing some of the talent that they have through this. Agreed, but there are much better picks from the catalogues of these talented people. ![]() |

Gangland - Vertigo

Aah nice review. I wondered what Azarello was like before he hit the big time and now I guess I can safely give it a miss. |

Aug 19 2008 17:53:08 Thanks... Yeah, Azzarello's story was very abrupt and the narration was too hurried. You'd never guess that he'd go on to write 100 Bullets.

Aug 20 2008 12:29:07 Back to writing - awesome! Hate to be a nitpicker, but do you think it might be superfluous asking us to avoid a comic that most wouldn't have heard of before you told us how bad it was? Considering the nature of our music section, I guess it's somewhat hypocritical, but let's hear about the good stuff! If you're operating on a review-as-you-read basis, I guess it's understandable though.

Re:Gangland - Vertigo
Aug 20 2008 13:45:40 ^^You are right. All of the reviews have been on review-after-reading basis. I guess I should get down to reviewing some exclusively good ones then (if they're going to be old comics) and review the newer ones as they come out.
One thing I dislike (what most other sites follow) are those issue by issue reviews of comic series'. I mean, it's alright if a single issue in itself is a very special one (say, like the 60th issue of Y - The Last Man or something) but its quite pointless dedicating an entire review for each single of a big series that comes out. So usually, concerning the newer comics, I'm just waiting for the series to end, however big/small it maybe. What do you guys think? |

Re:Gangland - Vertigo
Aug 20 2008 14:06:29 I'd like to see reviews of the well known stuff. Especially Sandman, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Transmet, things like that. Maybe the Garth Ennis run on Hellblazer, stuff that you probably know all ready like the back of your hand and can review in your sleep and which is also generally regarded as classic comic literature.

Re:Gangland - Vertigo
Aug 20 2008 14:13:37 Heh. All of them are 5/5 material afaic.
Let's see... I'll try my hand at something like that soon. As an afterthought, have any of you tried your hand at comic reviews, or would be interested in writing any? |

Re:Gangland - Vertigo
Aug 20 2008 18:06:47 Oh hell no, reviewing single issues is something that dedicated comic review sites can try doing. Besides, I doubt it'd make very good reading for anyone other than a hardcore fan would find it good reading, and half of your text would be crawling with [Spoiler Alert!] tags.
Wouldn't mind doing a comic review or two, but most of the comics I choose to read these days are your recommendations, and you've invariably already reviewed them. However, I'm through with the 6-issue Wanted and got a couple of MGS comics lined up, and since I'm already seen the movie (for the former) and played the game (for the latter), I might have the ammo to make them count. |

Re:Gangland - Vertigo
Aug 20 2008 19:00:16 Cool. I've played MGS but haven't read any comics. And in case you hadn't seen, I've already reviewed Wanted but multiple reviews would be A-ok in my book.

Aug 20 2008 19:24:23 Daym. My memory is failing me in my old age. Think if I'm doing it, I'll just do the movie review and tie it on with yours. Don't know if it deserves a review, though. Let's see.

Re:Gangland - Vertigo
Aug 20 2008 19:32:44 I still haven't seen the movie. I don't think I will. But a review'd be cool.
