Stuff that can play in the background while I read; in the vein of Tangerine Dream and such like. Preferably no vocals or low languid ones. A dark feel is welcomed.

Stuff like Tangerine Dream would probably be Popol Vuh, Can, early Kraftwerk. Maybe Brian Eno's solo stuff although I can't stand him. You could try Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works which is a 2 CD set and pretty good.
Merzbow might work but stick to his Music for Bondage Performance series and nothing else. Lycia is more darkwave i guess with floating chick vocals on top. great background music. Amber Asylum is sort of folky, classical, darkwave i guess. Instrumental but i do get distracted and start air violining occasionally. Great band.
Not sure if you like the whole post scene but Jesu could work as well and also Mitch Harris's Scorn thing which is ambient but also little more drum n bass oriented. more later
Oh, you didn't like Elend no?

I skimmed over Aphex Twin - Ambient works vol 1. Doesn't work for me. In fact I once got a free-for-download album called Music for the Paranoid Schizophrenic by Brainsaw, which I thought was better in this type of music.
Anyway what I'm really looking for is stuff that goes with reading old-skool horror, so languid atmospherics with a mystical flavor is what I want.

Some of that stuff sounds like it would fit very well. Now to see if I can actually find it on my usual sources.
Any opinions on this band called Endura?

See, the stuff you read is so boring that you need additional forms of entertainment to keep you going. I can never forgive you for giving me a non-fiction book on butterflies. :P

Lustmord's The Place Where The Black Stars Hang; Raison d'etre's In Sadness, Silence and Solitude; Darrin Verhagen's Shinjuku Thief project; Sanctum's New York City Bluster... All excellent fare for an eerily calm atmosphere while reading.
Anything put out by Cold Meat Industry (Atrium Carceri, Coph Nia, In Slaughter Natives) or Cyclic Law (Hildebrand, Northaunt) is great too.
Lastly, <pimpin'> check out my own project here: podsafeaudio.com/jamroom/bands/1550/

I can vouch for the awesomeness of Aghast. One of the most genuinely creepy pieces of music I've listened to. The part on Sacrifice where what can only be loosely described as tortured screams come in is one of the most singularly disturbing passages ever.

@OBT:
Much thanks for the reccos. The Jaaportit and Aghast albums are the sort of sound I was looking for, and Aghast can get pretty creepy at times. Couldn't get any Liholesie or Moevot on RS.

Farking Arse, that book was full of the gangbang and rape rituals that occur in butterfly colonies. You don't deserve any more of my books :p
