Batman R.I.P. 1 Year, 2 Months ago

I hope someone here has read this.
Alright, so I read the series a while back. I got everything that was on the DC checklist, and what did I understand? Nothing. I didn't know what the hell was going on. I looked for more issues, but there's really nothing following the series.
Gaiman's "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?" is supposed to be a look at Wayne's history, but there's nothing tying in with the R.I.P. storyline.
R.I.P was written by none other than Grant Morrison, and I started reading with high expectations. I know there has to be an explanation for everything so I'm not exactly let down, but I just want to figure out this story. Are there any back issues I need to read? It's obvious that something was put in Batman's mind in the past, which is 'activated' now, but....what the hell is going on?!
Help!

TBH I haven't really been following current continuity ever since Identity Crisis, but it's possible that the Chaxster or someone else has.

From what I understood of Morisson's run on Batman, everything's connected right from the first issue of Batman that he did. The whole RIP storyline also has the heart of hush, the outsiders storyline, and a couple of other tangents that connect. Then the series takes a two issue break when Gaiman does Whatever Happened.... before Morisson comes back to finish and tie everything up in Final Crisis. I don;t know, the whole thing seems really complicated and I've got RIP and all the tie ins sitting on my comp but never really started on it. Should get round to it one of these days.

Yeah I read the Outsiders and Heart of Hush. There's nothing here that's shows us what's happening next. I suppose we'll just have to wait until their 3 month hiatus is done. My main concern was, which back issues should be read to make sense of Morrison's current run.

Yeah I think that's Batman: The Black Glove storyline that came just before the RIP storyline started. That's up on demonoid as well but there are hints and clues and what not to the RIP storyline right from Morisson's start on Batman.

RIP was very good. I just didn't like the ending. Will read again and see if my opinion changes though.
Now, the Resurrection of Ras Al Ghul, that was utter crap.

^ That's the thing, it hasn't ended yet.
Somebody have a Demoinod invite for a fellow comics fan? Can't find The Black Glove anywhere else.

^^Use DC++. There are tons of comic hubs that get scans quicker than the torrent sites - you can find almost ANYTHING you want. Ping me if you figure out how to work DC++ and I'll give you an invite to a good hub.
As for RIP, like GK, its somewhere on the comp but I still haven't got to it yet.

So, inspired by this thread, I went back to Morrisson's run on Batman and started all over again from Batman and Son where Talia, Ras Al Ghul's daughter turns up with a boy claiming that its Batboy's son. This was a pretty crappy start to Morrisson's Batman and things didn't really improve till The Clown at Midnight or issue 663 which is another typical Joker vs. Batman tale but slightly better than the norm thanks to Morrisson's style and some pretty cool artwork. Then things just kind of stabilise a little till The Black Glove storyline which was pretty good although quite convoluted and demanding a fair amount of patience. Without giving away any spoilers for those of you intend to read this, this is the start of Batman's horrendous psychological terror at the hands of the Black Glove and it makes what happened in Hush or Knightfall seem quite lame and harmless. RIP finally, which I finished last night was a rip roaring read and some excellent stuff. Again, very complicated plot that gets thicker and thicker with strands of the plot coming together pretty much from all over the place but I couldn't wait for the ending and was frantic to finish it so I'd know what happens in the end although I already knew at the back of my mind that it was open ended and a resolution would only happen in Final Crisis. Anyway, Morrisson starts off in a very lame manner before slowly picking up the pace and really acing it on The Black Glove and RIP. Worth the effort for Batman fans but very little in it if you're not.

Hm has this turned into a Batman discussion? Anyway to contribute, I read Arkham Asylum: Living Hell This was for most part really well written with Batman reduced to a very tangential role. The stars of this are Warren White who pleads insanity for a financial scam and finds himself in Arkham Asylum with its psychotic denizens including a few Batman regulars like Joker and Two Face as well as what I think is an original character - Humpty Dumpty. The Dumpty story is one of the most moving and weird pieces I've read in a bit and totally raises the bar on this series, as does the Jane Doe story arc. It loses the plot somewhat towards the end in an attempt to bring a literal significance to its title, but the ride is spectacular most of the way. Highly recommended.
