Wired's Hands-on for Chris Taylor's Demigod HERE

When Gas Powered Games' new PC strategy game Demigod is released next month, WarCraft fans are going to find the gameplay pleasantly familiar.

Though I wouldn't go so far as to say it blatantly rips off the popular WarCraft III mod Defense of the Ancients, the similarities make it impossible to discuss Demigod without mentioning its inspiration. Not only does Demigod mimic the concept of using heroic avatars to lead armies (calling them "demigods" instead of "heroes"), the overall feel of combat and gameplay in the newer game is so inherently similar to its predecessor as to be instantly recognizable to those gamers who have experienced both.

Well its not really a arcade game. I used to play it at home with games like super mario and contra etc., They where a major part of home gameing in the 90s..

I thought people would get nostalgic with that one..! I suppose no one here know about them!

Ron Gilbert -- best known for his work on LucasArts adventure games in the late '80s/early '90s -- and Clayton Kauzlaric -- who worked with Gilbert at Cavedog Entertainment in the late '90s -- decided it would be fun to spoof game industry clichés with a series of online comics, and they needed a name for, in Gilbert's words, a "ridiculous over-the-top computer game hero."

Kauzlaric suggested "Deathspank" and the name stuck, so they used him as a centerpiece while mocking cut-scenes, review scores, excessive violence, and other game-relevant topics. These were spare-time projects, but as the series evolved, the duo found they couldn't stop thinking about that character.

"He just took on a life of his own," says Gilbert. "As we did more of the comics and we started talking about him and we started writing stuff about him -- he was so interesting in the way he was a parody of things. It kind of became a natural idea: 'We need a game for this guy.'"
