While India's upstarts have always had false hopes of 'making it' (whatever that means in this context) with mediocre equipment and participating in shitty college competitions, this one came as a big surprise. I mean, why would a bunch of seemingly normal metal kids have any false hope of ladyboys? Upon closer inspection (read: after wearing contact lenses) though, it becomes embarrassingly clear that I got the title trantastically wrong, and an even closer inspection (read: play the damn CD) lead me to some of the better music that I've heard coming from a local band, metal or not.
This is Theorized, part of the new breed of Bangalore metal bands that are out to help each other and play their hearts out, you know...like in a scene. Theorized plays a brand of aggressive, groovy and old school thrash metal, but without too many ah-that-riff-sounds-like-so-and-so that happens all the time with these already tired revivalists. The riffs keep coming at you and if you thought the first riff from the first song was great and that they've probably put their best as the opener, you've got it wrong. There are ballsy and more melodic style riffs, with intelligent song structures and arrangements that are found throughout this debut EP. Another cool thing about them is, they actually make use of two guitars with sweet harmonies, interplays and smartly structured rhythms (like on Dark Incarnation's ending), and to round it off, the solos seem to have a strong Alex Skolnick influence going on (like on Blackout's excellent outro) with the oddball angular phrasing that he's trademarked. After being a bit apprehensive to open this package in the first place, I quickly found myself giving this a few listens back to back, a couple more listens while driving around, a couple more when friends came over to show them how local guys have managed to get right what many signed revivalists of today haven't, and a few more to make sure these guys are not just good for India's standards, but good. On the downside though, the vocalist seems to think he's in a death metal band while the rest don't, and this can get over the top at times. That, and they waste a good minute or so doing the intro. Intros work at times for sure, but it's pointless to have a one minute+ intro for a four song to-the-point thrash metal album, especially when the song that follows has its own intro as well. This could've seriously been a better listening experience with that chopped off. Check these guys out. I'm rooting for a full length album soon from this band, this time with real drums. Till then, this'll do fine. Year of Release: 2009 Label: Self

Re:Theorized - False Hope of Tyranny
May 16 2009 00:57:32 yepp these guy ve done it
somehow they ve globalised the song writing[structure]instead of keeping it the simple cheesy indian way. plus the production is insane and i feel the INTRO is good coz it actually shows what everyone is capable of[but for the drummer(who is explosive LIVE)] and the bass tone and the playin is so clearly heard...i felt it was a good opening chapter where everyones capabilities are instantly shown... cheers to ankit who mixed this stuff he also mixed our stuff ,at the end o the day... cheers and best o luck to em... |

May 16 2009 01:36:48 What's a globalised song structure ? Asking because I want to implement this fascinating idea in my band as well.

Re:Theorized - False Hope of Tyranny
May 16 2009 07:52:04 WTF is globalised songwriting? They took a loan from WHO to write this stuff?
Apart from the trying-too-hard macho vocals, this is a very cool set of songs. The riffs really flow well into each other, some good angular lead work and interesting layering throughout. Where these guys have won out over a lot of other crap I've been hearing from the local scene is that they haven't tried to experiment, whatever that means outside of a science lab, or show off how technical they can be but instead have a clear idea of what they want to play and have done what it takes to do just that. |

Re:Theorized - False Hope of Tyranny
May 16 2009 11:28:29 globalized song structure :
its kinda tough to explain. this statement BELOW is kinda a metaphor for the above statement of mine or show off how technical they can be but instead have a clear idea of what they want to play and have done what it takes to do just that. sometimess song writing is more than just being TECH it is about the aesthetic and the way the song feels in the end right? a lotta int bands can do heavy tech stuff but they know where the[.] and [,] comes and theorized have got that spot-on here ... they know exactly which riff follows which....which riffs are to be chucked , which to be retained[they ve done this consciously in a planned way OR it just happened so well for them in the first place automatically.... THAT I DUNNO...] and i m very pleased with the way vocals sound and the vocal structuring... ITS JUST THAT THE FLOW IN THIS EP IS TOO GRAND [from riff to riff ,,, song to song]/ that even a new guy who trips on metallica or maiden is gonna like this.in the first listen... coupled with top notch old school production... which we ve not seen from many others in india yet. dunno if i entirely said what i wanted to ... kinda hard to explain |

Re:Theorized - False Hope of Tyranny
May 16 2009 13:23:41 It's called 'getting it right' like I mentioned in the review, there's hardly any globalisation here.

Re:Theorized - False Hope of Tyranny
May 16 2009 15:51:22 Well y'know, in the end globalisation gets to everything. Atleast that's what my economics text-book tells me.

May 18 2009 07:04:48 I still think these guys got a loan from the IMF. Goddamn banana republics.
