inception_poster2The subject of dreams is complex, fascinating and highly evocative. While it is debatable as to whether dreams are a phenomenon peculiar to humans alone, it is certain that the dream world is a fascinating place, at times contrary to the 'real world'.

To write on it eloquently either in the pure literary form, or the mixed form of comics or the totally visual cinematic form is in itself an achievement and for that alone, Christopher Nolan's Inception is worth a watch.

The idea of breaking into someone's dreams and memories, causing the dream world and reality to collide isn't a new one- this is seen in folk myths like the one Neil Gaiman and Yoshitaka Amano adapted in the Sandman comic, The Dream Hunters.

In the newer medium of cinema, we've seen this in the likes of The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. However, Inception pushes the envelop of science fiction in a manner that's reminiscent of Philip K. Dick. Here, we see the scientific method and the human psyche caught in a time-bound battle.

Cobb (Leonardo Di Caprio) is in a business of questionable legitimacy- that of stealing secrets through dreams. It's a highly complicated business that involves various people contributing to building the dream wherein a person's vulnerability is exploited and secrets revealed. Sometimes, this requires building a dream within a dream in order to break a person completely. As an individual, Cobb is flawed to the point where his personal insecurities and grievances often play havoc with his professional interests.

He is given a chance, however, to reconcile his professional and personal interests by Saito (Ken Watanabe). Cobb is required to carry out an inception, wherein, he needs to break into an individual's dreams and plant an idea, which makes it seem like it came from the individual itself. This puts his skills to the test as he is required to not just steal the individual's secrets but replace it with an idea that runs counter to the individual's own.

He jumps at this chance and at considerable risk to himself and his team, he breaks into the dreams of Robert Fischer, Jr. (Cillian Murphy)- the heir to a vast energy empire during a 10 hour flight from Australia to America. Cobb's already complex plan of building a multi-layer dream to convince Fischer Jr. to break up his corporation is doomed right from the start thanks to the tycoon's surprisingly powerful sub-conscious reflexes. Added to this, Cobb's own insecurities and vastly complicated psyche threaten to derail the operation entirely.

The movie is clearly one of the best in a long time. It is excellent on all technical grounds and well-worth a few views in theatres with a respectable sound system. Various details in the movie, particularly the end, is spawning a base of fanboys not unlike that of The Matrix. It remains to be seen whether this will create a rash of Me-too Inceptions.

Saw it yesterday. Was too long, DiCaprio was damn annoying and just about every twist and turn of the movie was telegraphed and it was like Nolan made a movie and then was forced to dumb it down and explain everything. Was hoping for a lot more than what this turned out to be and I was bored for large parts of it.
