Directed by Edward Wright and co-written/starring Simon Pegg, the same duo which made the awesome Shaun of the Dead, this film works on so many levels, it blew me away. For people who aren't familiar, Shaun was them parodying the Zombie/horror genre. It was brilliant and funny even if you hadn't seen the original films. But with Hot Fuzz they get to perfecting their skills and bring out one of the best comedies ever made.
At the receiving end this time, is the over the top hollywood action films, especially of the cop genre.
Simon Pegg plays Nicholas Angel, the over achieving cop from London. In fact he achieves so much, with 400% more arrests than the rest of them, they decide to give him a promotion and make him a Sergeant. That's the good part. The bad part is, he was making them all look bad, so they transfer him to a country-side small town called Sandford where no crime has been reported in 20 years. Simon goes there and ends up doing petty activities including busting under-age drinkers, shop-lifters and rescuing a swan that went missing. He's accompanied there by constable Butterman, who looks upto to the Londoner and loves all the action films that this film intends to parody. He's in the force only because his father is the Inspector.
Our protagonist is quick to discover that something is going wrong in the village when one character after another suspiciously die and the detectives close the case calling it all an accident. He tries hard to argue otherwise, but no one wants to listen. The rest of the movie is about how he goes around solving the crime.
It's not as simple as that though. There are jokes of all kinds stacked up in layers. You have your referential humour every now and then, you'll have your cliche-busting shots and scenes, tension built up for absolutely no fucking reason, a few slapstick moments here and there... on the top of all that you'll get shitloads of laugh-out-loud jokes as well. There's humour even in the way the film has been shot and edited like a slick action film.
You'll be blown away by the climax and the way they end the film especially, where you have the mandatory gun fight followed by a tragic event turned into a happy ending. I won't say more, just watch it.
The characters cannot be more awesome. The whole police force with the dumbass detectives, the inspector played by Jim Broadbent and the rest of the characters in the town are all brilliant. It was really cool to see Bill Bailey doing a recurring cameo. Watch his DVD Part Troll if stand-up comedians float your boat. He's phenomenal at that plus he's a great keyboard and guitar player to boot.
I cannot recommend this film enough.
